Flying into Melbourne from out of town for the business acceleration event of the year? To help you make the most of your Momentum experience, we’ve come up with our pick of the best places to discover in Melbourne – whether it’s for your pre-event caffeine hit, post-event tipple or a delectable dinner with other event attendees.

Melbourne’s morning coffee

This city is famed for its coffee, and for good reason. If you’re staying in the city, you will be absolutely spoilt for choice. To help you narrow down your decision, here are our top picks for coffee and breakfast.

If you feel like a walk before the event, head towards Southern Cross station to try Higher Ground, a vast warehouse space that has been elegantly transformed and attracts a crowd of discerning diners looking for innovative and delicious dishes. With coffee from Square One Coffee Roasters – Higher Ground’s exclusive roaster – you can’t go wrong for your early-morning brew.

Around the corner, you’ll find Kinfolk, where you can enjoy breakfast with a clean conscience at this volunteer-run café. The food and coffee are amazing, the vibe is eminently feel-good, and you walk away knowing that your breakfast dollars are going to a good cause.

Closer to the Sofitel, Cumulus Inc is one of Melbourne’s most revered eateries. Led by the acclaimed Andrew McConnell, Cumulus Inc is a popular spot for the city’s business folk to gather before work – so get in early to grab a table or a spot at the bar.

Early evening drinks and a bite

After you’ve attended Momentum, you’ll need some time to digest all that’s next and new in the digital age – and what better way to do so than at one of Melbourne’s most-loved local eateries or night spots?

Melbourne has a very cool collection of rooftop bars. They have been sprouting up all over the city, offering people incredible views and great vibes. If you can jag it with the weather, then rug up and head upstairs to one of these places for a quick pre-dinner drink. The Rooftop Bar in Curtain House is the grand dame of these open-air bars. Climb the seven flights of stairs or wait for the rickety elevator, and be spoilt upon arrival by the funky vibe and 360-degree views around the city. (Added bonus: if you’re super hungry, you’ll find bold, unique Mexican one flight down at Mesa Verde).

If the weather is temperamental and you’d prefer to stay inside, then settle in at The Melbourne Supper Club, an institution that has been fueling the conversations of Melbourne’s most elegant for decades. Pair your wine with some freshly shucked oysters or salted nuts, or stay for a perfectly grilled steak. The choices are sublime.

Other famed Melbourne eateries include the Asian-fusion master, Chin Chin (be prepared to queue); the mouth-watering share plates that come off the grill at Argentinian restaurant San Telmo; or our favourite hawker-style basement, Gingerboy. Or simply wander the laneways until you find something that calls your name. You can’t go wrong.

More time to spare?

If you’re staying a night or two, and have some spare time up your sleeve to explore some of Melbourne’s other attractions, then you might like to sample some of these delights:

  • The Night Market – on every Wednesday in winter at Melbourne’s eponymous Queen Vic Markets. A great atmosphere, a huge array of food stalls, live music and more.
  • ACMI – if you don’t get enough of a digital fix at Momentum, then head across to Federation Square and dive into ACMI (the Australian Centre for the Moving Image). Delve into the digital past at ACMI’s museum or catch one of the exhibitions currently on show.
  • St Kilda – hop on a tram from the city and you’ll be in St Kilda within about 30 minutes. Here, you can wander the streets or the boulevard along Port Phillip Bay, stopping for coffee or to browse the eclectic collection of shops. Ackland St is famous for its European cake shops. Just saying.
  • The Emporium – if you’re hoping for a shopping fix while in Melbourne, then you can’t go past the recently opened Emporium. Here, you’ll find some of the best names in fashion – from the bespoke to the high street to lust-worthy luxe.
