Once upon a time, in a far away land, there were machines called faxes. You would magically transmit paper from one location to another over phone lines using these space age machines. Even before that people used to stuff paper inside even more paper – these were called envelopes – and then lick paper stamps that showed proof of payment so that other people would carry your paper from one place to another.
This is how real estate agents used to have to get signatures. People would drive to each other, and present pen and paper. Or better yet, old deeds from the 1700’s were written with a plume in old-English calligraphy. My how things have changed, including our expectations.
I am the first to admit I am a DocuSign junky. I DocuSign everything, and when I am told a “wet signature” is required by an entity I nearly break into hives. Don’t they understand WHAT DocuSign does? I have used it with the IRS for goodness sake and some non-government entity wants to inconvenience my clients by having to meet me to fill out paper forms? No.
Back in the day communications were different. We have gone from a time where the Pony Express would cross the country to deliver your mail to people sending Tweets to announce celebrity news, or a crisis somewhere in the world. News and information travel fast, but have not always.
I took a step back in time earlier this week. I have been working on a short sale for a month or so. We got the bank’s offer within 2 weeks of submission. I reached out to the Buyer’s agent to check on the status of an addendum I had requested a few times.
Yes I am guilty of being verbose, and I missed a few of his emails, and he missed the mention of the final piece the bank required being this addendum. His client had just returned to Indiana. We’re in Delaware. That didn’t phase me, I quickly offered to email the client via DocuSign for signatures. The response was stunning – he can’t use technology. First, people are never in the “can’t” category, that is really the “don’t want to” category. Second, DocuSign is the EASIEST eSign solution to use – If you can open an email and clink a link you can DocuSign a document. It would take until at least Friday to overnight the documents, get the individual to complete the documents, sign them and send them back, all delaying the closing and approval even further.
I had to find a solution. I solve problems, that is my nature and job. Social media. The old meets the new. I had to know someone in my network who was in Elkhart, Indiana. So I hit Twitter, I searched Facebook and found the right guy, a Facebook friend who knew the right person in the town. That was Monday night. By Tuesday evening the document was completed and back in my in-box ready to be uploaded to DocuSign and quickly returned by my Sellers.
That took them two days. I didn’t get the final until Thursday evening. So the old fashioned sort of beat the new model. The combination of new and old worked together to get things done faster than even possible in the past. The value of the social networks combined with the efficiency, simplicity and ease of DocuSign worked together beautifully.
Ironically, our negotiator was on vacation so in the end, the timeline would not have mattered. That is about right in the crazy world of @mayaREguru. Oh well, at least I have DocuSign to save me time and gas money while bringing a bit of sanity to my day.
